- pending_column.rs: split try_to_sidecar into is_complete-checked to_sidecar
  with typed PendingColumnError so 'incomplete column' is no longer conflated
  with VariableList size-bound failures (jimmygchen, dapplion).
- pending_components.rs: get_cached_data_columns filters by is_complete first,
  then logs an error if a complete column fails to assemble (dknopik's sanity
  check on filter_map silent drops).
- data_column_verification.rs: add the missing column.slot == bid.slot
  consistency check in validate_data_column_sidecar_for_gossip_gloas, using
  the previously-defined-but-unused BlockSlotMismatch error variant
  (jimmygchen).

48b24e9029 Use SignedExecutionPayloadBid directly in pending payload cache
- Replace the `PendingPayloadBid` projection (slot + blob_kzg_commitments)
  with `Arc<SignedExecutionPayloadBid<E>>`. Cloning becomes a cheap Arc
  bump and the bid carries enough context for future bid<->envelope
  cross-checks. Add a `signed_payload_bid_from_block` helper.
- `PendingColumn` switches from a pre-sized `Vec<Option<_>>` to a sparse
  `HashMap<usize, _>`; the `new_with_capacity(num_blobs)` constructor is
  gone since callers no longer need to know the blob count up front.
- `PendingComponents::merge_data_columns` takes a slice instead of an
  owning iterator (it only borrows + clones cells).
- Store `block_root` in `PendingComponents` so `make_available` and
  `get_cached_data_columns` no longer require it as an argument (the
  arg was misnamed `block_hash` in `make_available`).
- Rename `PendingComponents::empty` -> `new`; it is the only constructor.

#9077

  Where possible replaces all instances of `validator_monitor::timestamp_now` with `chain.slot_clock.now_duration().unwrap_or_default()`.
Where chain/slot_clock is not available, instead replace it with a convenience function `slot_clock::timestamp_now`.
Remove the `validator_monitor::timestamp_now` function.

bff72a920d Update database and block replayer to handle payload envelopes (#8886)
Closes:

- https://github.com/sigp/lighthouse/issues/8869

  - Update `BlockReplayer` to support replay of execution payload envelopes.
- Update `HotColdDB` to load payload envelopes and feed them to the `BlockReplayer` for both hot + cold states. However the cold DB code is not fully working yet (see: https://github.com/sigp/lighthouse/issues/8958).
- Add `StatePayloadStatus` to allow callers to specify whether they want a state with a payload applied, or not.
- Fix the state cache to key by `StatePayloadStatus`.
- Lots of fixes to block production and block processing regarding state management.
- Initial test harness support for producing+processing Gloas blocks+envelopes
- A few new tests to cover Gloas DB operations

2c1f1c1605 Migrate derivative to educe (#8125)
Fixes #7001.

  Mostly mechanical replacement of `derivative` attributes with `educe` ones.

### **Attribute Syntax Changes**

```rust
// Bounds: = "..." → (...)
#[derivative(Hash(bound = "E: EthSpec"))]
#[educe(Hash(bound(E: EthSpec)))]
// Ignore: = "ignore" → (ignore)
#[derivative(PartialEq = "ignore")]
#[educe(PartialEq(ignore))]
// Default values: value = "..." → expression = ...
#[derivative(Default(value = "ForkName::Base"))]
#[educe(Default(expression = ForkName::Base))]
// Methods: format_with/compare_with = "..." → method(...)
#[derivative(Debug(format_with = "fmt_peer_set_as_len"))]
#[educe(Debug(method(fmt_peer_set_as_len)))]
// Empty bounds: removed entirely, educe can infer appropriate bounds
#[derivative(Default(bound = ""))]
#[educe(Default)]
// Transparent debug: manual implementation (educe doesn't support it)
#[derivative(Debug = "transparent")]
// Replaced with manual Debug impl that delegates to inner field
```

**Note**: Some bounds use strings (`bound("E: EthSpec")`) for superstruct compatibility (`expected ','` errors).

f5809aff87 Bump ssz_types to v0.12.2 (#8032)
https://github.com/sigp/lighthouse/issues/8012

  Replace all instances of `VariableList::from` and `FixedVector::from` to their `try_from` variants.

While I tried to use proper error handling in most cases, there were certain situations where adding an `expect` for situations where `try_from` can trivially never fail avoided adding a lot of extra complexity.

76a37a0aef Revert incorrect fix made in #8179 (#8215)
This PR reverts #8179.

It turns out that the fix was invalid because an unknown root is always not a finalized descendant:

522bd9e9c6/consensus/proto_array/src/proto_array.rs (L976-L979)

so for any data columns with unknown parents, it will always penalise the gossip peer and disconnect it pretty quickly. On a small network, the node may lose all of its peers.

The impact is pretty obvious when the peer count is small and sync speed is slow, and is therefore easily reproducible by running a fresh supernode on devnet-3.

This isn't as obvious on a live testnet like holesky / sepolia, we haven't noticed this, probably due to its high peer count and sync speed - the nodes might be able to reach head quickly before losing too many peers.

  The previous behaviour isn't ideal but safe: triggering unknown parent lookup and penalise the bad peer if it happens to be malicious or faulty. So for now it's safer to revert the change and plan for a proper fix after the v8 release.

538b70495c Reject data columns that does not descend from finalize root instead of ignoring it (#8179)
This issue was identified during the fusaka audit competition.

The [`verify_parent_block_and_finalized_descendant`](62d9302e0f/beacon_node/beacon_chain/src/data_column_verification.rs (L606-L627)) in data column gossip verification currently load the parent first before checking if the column descends from the finalized root.

However, the `fork_choice.get_block(&block_parent_root)` function also make the same check internally:

8a4f6cf0d5/consensus/fork_choice/src/fork_choice.rs (L1242-L1249)

Therefore, if the column does not descend from the finalized root, we return an `UnknownParent` error, before hitting the `is_finalized_checkpoint_or_descendant` check just below.

Which means we `IGNORE` the gossip message instead `REJECT`, and the gossip peer is not _immediately_ penalised. This deviates from the spec.

However, worth noting that lighthouse will currently attempt to request the parent from this peer, and if the peer is not able to serve the parent, it gets penalised with a `LowToleranceError`, and will get banned after ~5 occurences.

ffa7b2b2b9/beacon_node/network/src/sync/network_context.rs (L1530-L1532)

This PR will penalise the bad peer immediately instead of performing block lookups before penalising it.

- [x] Optimise `with_proposer_cache` to use `OnceCell`.
- [x] All tests passing.
- [x] Resolve all remaining `FIXME(sproul)`s.
- [x] Unit tests for `ProtoBlock::proposer_shuffling_root_for_child_block`.
- [x] End-to-end regression test.

a134d43446 Use rayon to speed up batch KZG verification (#7921)
Addresses #7866.

  Use Rayon to speed up batch KZG verification during range / backfill sync.

While I was analysing the traces, I also discovered a bug that resulted in only the first 128 columns in a chain segment batch being verified. This PR fixes it, so we might actually observe slower range sync due to more cells being KZG verified.

I've also updated the handling of batch KZG failure to only find the first invalid KZG column when verification fails as this gets very expensive during range/backfill sync.

40c2fd5ff4 Instrument tracing spans for block processing and import (#7816)
#7815

- removes all existing spans, so some span fields that appear in logs like `service_name` may be lost.
- instruments a few key code paths in the beacon node, starting from **root spans** named below:

* Gossip block and blobs
* `process_gossip_data_column_sidecar`
* `process_gossip_blob`
* `process_gossip_block`
* Rpc block and blobs
* `process_rpc_block`
* `process_rpc_blobs`
* `process_rpc_custody_columns`
* Rpc blocks (range and backfill)
* `process_chain_segment`
* `PendingComponents` lifecycle
* `pending_components`

To test locally:
* Run Grafana and Tempo with https://github.com/sigp/lighthouse-metrics/pull/57
* Run Lighthouse BN with `--telemetry-collector-url http://localhost:4317`

Some captured traces can be found here: https://hackmd.io/@jimmygchen/r1sLOxPPeg

Removing the old spans seem to have reduced the memory usage quite a lot - i think we were using them on long running tasks and too excessively:

8bc6693dac Fix wrong columns getting processed on a CGC change (#7792)
This PR fixes a bug where wrong columns could get processed immediately after a CGC increase.

Scenario:
- The node's CGC increased due to additional validators attached to it (lets say from 10 to 11)
- The new CGC is advertised and new subnets are subscribed immediately, however the change won't be effective in the data availability check until the next epoch (See [this](ab0e8870b4/beacon_node/beacon_chain/src/validator_custody.rs (L93-L99))). Data availability checker still only require 10 columns for the current epoch.
- During this time, data columns for the additional custody column (lets say column 11) may arrive via gossip as we're already subscribed to the topic, and it may be incorrectly used to satisfy the existing data availability requirement (10 columns), and result in this additional column (instead of a required one) getting persisted, resulting in database inconsistency.

b48879a566 Remove KZG verification from local block production and blobs fetched from the EL (#7713)
#7700

  As described in title, the EL already performs KZG verification on all blobs when they entered the mempool, so it's redundant to perform extra validation on blobs returned from the EL.

This PR removes
- KZG verification for both blobs and data columns during block production
- KZG verification for data columns after fetch engine blobs call. I have not done this for blobs because it requires extra changes to check the observed cache, and doesn't feel like it's a worthy optimisation given the number of blobs per block.

This PR does not remove KZG verification on the block publishing path yet.

e6ef644db4 Verify getBlobsV2 response and avoid reprocessing imported data columns (#7493)
#7461 and partly #6439.

Desired behaviour after receiving `engine_getBlobs` response:

1. Gossip verify the blobs and proofs, but don't mark them as observed yet. This is because not all blobs are published immediately (due to staggered publishing). If we mark them as observed and not publish them, we could end up blocking the gossip propagation.
2. Blobs are marked as observed _either_ when:
* They are received from gossip and forwarded to the network .
* They are published by the node.

Current behaviour:
- We only gossip verify `engine_getBlobsV1` responses, but not `engine_getBlobsV2` responses (PeerDAS).
- After importing EL blobs AND before they're published, if the same blobs arrive via gossip, they will get re-processed, which may result in a re-import.

  1. Perform gossip verification on data columns computed from EL `getBlobsV2` response. We currently only do this for `getBlobsV1` to prevent importing blobs with invalid proofs into the `DataAvailabilityChecker`, this should be done on V2 responses too.
2. Add additional gossip verification to make sure we don't re-process a ~~blob~~ or data column that was imported via the EL `getBlobs` but not yet "seen" on the gossip network. If an "unobserved" gossip blob is found in the availability cache, then we know it has passed verification so we can immediately propagate the `ACCEPT` result and forward it to the network, but without re-processing it.

**UPDATE:** I've left blobs out for the second change mentioned above, as the likelihood and impact is very slow and we haven't seen it enough, but under PeerDAS this issue is a regular occurrence and we do see the same block getting imported many times.

93ec9df137 Compute proposer shuffling only once in gossip verification (#7304)
When we perform data column gossip verification, we sometimes see multiple proposer shuffling cache miss simultaneously and this results in multiple threads computing the shuffling cache and potentially slows down the gossip verification.

Proposal here is to use a `OnceCell` for each shuffling key to make sure it's only computed once. I have only implemented this in data column verification as a PoC, but this can also be applied to blob and block verification
